While doing a series of reports on alternative energy sources, opportunistic reporter Kimberly Wells witnesses an accident at a nuclear power plant. Wells is determined to publicize the incident, but soon finds herself entangled in a sinister conspiracy to keep the full impact of the incident a secret.

Three powerhouse performances punctuate this rousing effort from director James Bridges. And though its subject matter might not necessarily age in the sense that it features many "pressing" questions about the current pace of our country's energy consumption, that doesn't necessarily mean that the issues discussed in "The China Syndrome" aren't reverberating in different respects throughout society today. In fact, problems such as negligence, indiscretion, and general corporate oversight still plague many different forms of the energy industry today (i.e. "Erin Brockovich," "Deepwater Horizon" etc.) It's a truly worthy and riveting effort, featuring one of the best Jack Lemmon performances I've seen. Definitely a must-watch.

Absolutely riveting and suspenseful with great performances. I really loved the ending of going from bars and tone to silent credits.

Classic suspense/thriller masterpiece involving a TV crew taking unauthorized footage of a supposedly minor incident at a nuclear power plant are alarmed to learn that the situation they witnessed & recorded was far more dire and close-to-catastrophic than originally anticipated. For a movie with no musical score, this one is amazingly and consistently intense! Fonda as the reporter and Douglas as the cameraman are outstanding as is Lemmon as the main plant supervisor who is caught in the middle of doing the right thing and being pressured by company heads to start things up again in spite of the heavy potential disaster involved. This movie also had the uncanny timing of being released shortly before the real-life partial core meltdown accident at the Three-Mile Island nuclear facility - thus adding even more punch to it. A very powerful viewing experience in many ways!
