While doing a series of reports on alternative energy sources, opportunistic reporter Kimberly Wells witnesses an accident at a nuclear power plant. Wells is determined to publicize the incident, but soon finds herself entangled in a sinister conspiracy to keep the full impact of the incident a secret.

When asked what is my favorite horror film, I always reply "The China Syndrome". See, films like Frankenstein, Dracula, Friday the 13th, etcetera, I have a hard time suspending reality; there's always a small part of me that KNOWS this is a movie. Not so with The China Syndrome. The horror is not so much of a nuclear disaster but the beaurocracy behind such an event happening; and yes, I did see this film two weeks after Three Mile Island happened back in 1979. When you watch this film (either for the first time or again) notice that there is no music to heighten the drama; only the incidental music coming from a jukebox or a radio. Kudos to Jack Lemmon, Jane Fonda, and Michael Douglas for their marvelous work in this film, and character actor Wilford Brimley steals the scenes he's in with the greatest of ease. I highly recommend you own this on DVD.

What we must quarrel with is the heartless, devious, and appallingly manipulative manner in which the authors of the film have drawn their good-guys-and-bad-guys battlelines ...

For director James Bridges, the film looks like a hack job, particularly after the personal anguish of 9/30/55, but it's a very good hack job: strong, simple, and perfectly paced, until the last reel flounders in a bit of overkill.
