The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933)

Renowned for his excess, King Henry VIII goes through a series of wives during his rule. With Anne Boleyn, his second wife, executed on charges of treason, King Henry weds maid Jane Seymour, but that marriage also ends in tragedy. Not one to be single for long, the king picks German-born Anne of Cleves as his bride, but their union lasts only months before an annulment is granted, and King Henry continues his string of spouses.

The film's most famous bit involves Laughton eating a chicken with a primal gusto that clearly defines King Henry's character as a gluttonous man devouring whatever is put before him.

Caught this by accident on TV today and was surprised. It has a good humourous side to it and is well-acted. Some excellent moments, especially the Henry VIII & Anne of Cleves bit!

Bizarre, fairly enjoyable autobiographical pick of King Henry the 8th of England (Charles Laughton). The film begins after he has already has had two wives, Catharine of Aragon (of which the film humourously dismisses the long marriage as boring); and Anne Boleyn (Merle Oberon), of which he executes during the film. Then the film tells the story of marrying his remaining four wives, one being Anne of Cleves, played by Laughton's actual wife Elsa Lanchester. Laughton keeps the film going with his funny, Oscar winning performance, and the visuals are very nice too look. The film is a little dated and bit inaccurate of biography of King Henry, but it does provide sufficient entertainment value for a re-watch.

Who would have thought King Henry VIII was just a guy trying to find true love? This picture almost shows you the human side of the often misunderstood monarch by following him between wives number 2 whom he beheaded on his wedding night to number three and number six. Great performance by Charles Laughton as he brings humor and life to this film.

Wildly inaccurate, yet also wildly watchable, Alexander Korda's The Private Life of Henry VIII won Charles Laughton his only Academy Award, as 1933's Best Actor. Unusually warm-hearted for a biopic about such a notorious figure and rather quirky in tone, the film, as a whole, is something very different from the typical biopic. Laughton's performance gets better as the film goes along, oddly enough; in the beginning, he veers towards hamminess, but his monarch gradually becomes a more human figure. Solid, fun, if the furthest thing from the truth.
