The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933)

Renowned for his excess, King Henry VIII goes through a series of wives during his rule. With Anne Boleyn, his second betrothed, executed on charges of treason, Henry weds maid Jane Seymour, but that wedded bliss also ends in tragedy. Not one to be single for long, the tyrannical king chooses German-born Anne of Cleves, but their union lasts only months before an annulment is granted, and so Henry's reign of spousal terror continues.

Charles Laughton gives an Oscar-winning performance as 14th century British monarch Henry VIII

The film's most famous bit involves Laughton eating a chicken with a primal gusto that clearly defines King Henry's character as a gluttonous man devouring whatever is put before him.

It's impossible to watch this film in the modern age without imagining that Charles Laughton is Matt Lucas from Little Britain, which is probably not a healthy thing when trying to give a true critique of a British film classic. That said, it is an enjoyable romp, very much a prototype 'Carry On...' film, but somewhere between being made and the present day it has lost quite a bit of its charm. Funny in places, mediocre in many more, but Donat gives a class performance and it is much more 'saucy' than could be expected for a film made in the thirties.
