This wasn't for me. It was a paint-by-numbers plot with a bad screenplay and poor editing to boot. It's cool to see good actors like Travolta, Freeman, Fraser, Robert Patrick and Famke Jannsen share the screen together but Fraser is incredibly over-the-top and weird in his performance. Morgan Freeman is passable but at times, he looks like he'd rather be anywhere else but on the screen. This isn't even mentioning some incredibly stiff acting by Ella Bleu Travolta and not to mention Brendan Fraser and Pete Stormare's ridiculous accents. I could go on and on but It's really not a good film.

These days it seems critics are likely to pan movie, unless it’s loaded with special effects. If you’re looking for a contemporary Mystery that hearkens back to Hitchcock noir, The Poison Rose is fantastic! Carson Philips (John Travolta) does a stellar performance as a Los Angeles private eye pulled back to his hometown to investigate a case. He’s so real that you forget he’s John Travolta. The inimitable Morgan Freeman pulls off the crime boss with flare.

It’s a preposterous plot, with a damp-squib ending, and like an episode of Dallas, the dialogue gets phonier and phonier.

this is a good movie.PERIOD! yeah its a bit slow but thats what makes it good.reminded you of the 70s 80s detectives films.this movie is not aiming for the oscar so dont judge it as if its oscar hopeful.enjoy the ride.travolta freeman famke fraser were all good.i hate so called 'critics' who cant seem to enjoy a simple movie without dissecting it inside out.its a low budget movie.treat it like one.dont be an asshat just because you can.
