Texas Rangers (2001)

Ten years after the Civil War has ended, the Governor of Texas asks Leander McNelly to form a company of Rangers to help uphold the law along the Mexican border. With a few veterans of the war, most of the recruits are young men who have little or no experience with guns or policing crime.

The film is strictly an old school sh**kickin' Western action shoot-'em-up where the good guys are handsome, the bad guys ugly, and the gals are all babes. There's little plot, lots of riding and shooting, and a PG-13 rating for violence only (meaning no bad language, drugs, sex, nudity, etc.) making it a good no-brainer popcorn flick for young and old couch potatoes into butt kickin' Westerns.

too many "leading" characters not sharing the spotlight while delivering long bits of dialogue that make the pace uncomfortable. all that aside, campy cheese in the vein of young guns but less entertaining and sadly fun to watch if only to poke fun at.

** (out of four) I have always thought that a decent movie could be made about the early history of the Texas Rangers, a group that was formed in the 1870's to bring justice to west central Texas. They played an important role in the famous Mason County War, aka the Hoodoo War. It featured such notable gunslingers as Scott Cooley and Johnny Ringo. The movie is a lightweight effort that features a young, hip, and attractive cast including James Van Der Beek, Dylan McDermott, Matt Keeslar, and Vincent Spano. But it fails to capture the intensity and seems mostly like young men playing dress-up. It's better than "American Outlaws", but that is far from "The Wild Bunch".
