Superlative Sturges fare that dances around the Hays Code with dialogue that nudges and winks. Colbert and Astor are blissfully over-the-top, while McCrea and a rather wooden Rudy Vallee dutifully straight-man themselves in order to advance the plot. The "screwball" elements here are inspired: The Ale and Quail Club, the Weenie King, Toto, the opening and the split screen finale. Bill Demarest given a smaller role in this one, but his screen time is well spent.

In the top ten screwball comedies of all time. Not only are Colbert and Joel McCrea fabulous, but so is Mary Astor as the ditzy princess and Rudy Vallee as a pathetic millionaire wooer. A completely delightful film.

Who needs prozac when you have Preston Sturges. As light as meringue but still delighfully whimsical story of a woman leaving her struggling husband architect, convinced that they will be better off apart so she can find a rich sugar daddy to somehow support them as 'brother and sister'. Sounds ridiculous? it is. But it's also Sturges in his prime and a joy to watch. There are many great scenes but the one on the train with the drunken hunting party was the highlight for me (in spite of the very dated racist depiction of the barkeep...).
