The Page Turner (2006)

Mélanie Prouvost, a ten-year-old butcher's daughter, is a gifted pianist. That is why she and her parents decide that she sit for the Conservatory entrance exam. Although Mélanie is very likely to be admitted, she unfortunately gets distracted by the president of the jury's offhand attitude and she fails. Ten years later, Mélanie becomes her page turner, waiting patiently for her revenge.

The plot and characters in the movies are so intense that watching it was pretty excruciating -- in a good way -- because you will constantly wonder whether what you thought happened really happened ... There were a lot of things left unsaid in this movie, but the excellent acting brought out the gist of the simple storyline in a very powerful way.

This is a somewhat depressing, but fascinating movie in which a young 13 year old feels her hopes of being a concert pianist are dashed by a thoughtless judge at a competition. This is a thoroughly French movie, exploring the inner workings of an angry and determined mind, one so determined that many years later, in her 20s, she sets in motion a plot to completely ruin the life of the one that offended her. Deborah Francois, who also starred in L'Enfant, is wickedly convincing in this role. You are left guessing how malicious her real intents are by trying to read what the little smiles and intense stares portend for the one who has offended her. It is not until the very end that you you see what was really in her soul.

Wonderfully slow-burning thriller about one woman's single-minded revenge. The performances are brilliantly under-stated (much like the similar-in-tone The Piano Teacher). The tension is slowly crafted and even though the end of the film is inevitable, there are plenty of points at which it, in weaker hands, could've turned elsewhere.

This girl seriously holds a grudge. I think most people will figure out what her plan is, but the pleasure is in watching it come to fruition.

A silent act of a revenge, since a wreck on her dream as 10-year-old. MÃ©lanie is a real "page turner" for this movie, kept me glued the whole time. DÃ©borah FranÃ§ois did better on this one than L'enfant. Absolutely stunning performance.
