The Page Turner (2006)

Mélanie Prouvost, a ten-year-old butcher's daughter, is a gifted pianist. That is why she and her parents decide that she sit for the Conservatory entrance exam. Although Mélanie is very likely to be admitted, she unfortunately gets distracted by the president of the jury's offhand attitude and she fails. Ten years later, Mélanie becomes her page turner, waiting patiently for her revenge.

I loved this French psychological revenge thriller. And I love Deborah Francois too;) I think she was in L'enfant.

French so I love it. Triller without blood and gead bodies, but will keep you uncomfortable in you seet.

Only the French would craft a revenge film like this. I highly enjoyed this one. The art of subtlety and gentle manipulation is perfectly captured in this film. The movie opens with young Melanie practicing (and eventually performing) for an important piano audition. An inconsiderate judge interrupts and inadvertantly sabotages her performance. Cut to 10 years later and Melanie re-enters the life of this inconsiderate judge. The film is slow moving with a constant tone of impending dread. At every turn you are waiting for Melanie to enact some kind of revenge on Ariane. The end result is a mix of obvious and unexpected. Great performances and wonderful direction make this film stand out from the many French dramas that come out each year. Highly recommended.

This is a somewhat depressing, but fascinating movie in which a young 13 year old feels her hopes of being a concert pianist are dashed by a thoughtless judge at a competition. This is a thoroughly French movie, exploring the inner workings of an angry and determined mind, one so determined that many years later, in her 20s, she sets in motion a plot to completely ruin the life of the one that offended her. Deborah Francois, who also starred in L'Enfant, is wickedly convincing in this role. You are left guessing how malicious her real intents are by trying to read what the little smiles and intense stares portend for the one who has offended her. It is not until the very end that you you see what was really in her soul.
