Quite a historical figure, impressive show of contemporary culture and art academy.

Turner's painting of the scene, The Fighting Temeraire will, in fact, become his masterpiece. As Mr. Turner is Mike Leigh's — a growling, snuffling, earthy work of art, every frame worthy of framing.

I just saw it this afternoon and loved it. While the script isn't exactly brilliant it is sparse and good when it needs to be, fitting in well with the reflective mood of the film. All performances are superb, and I cannot praise the photography enough- many of the outside scenes are works of art in their composition (one brief scene- Turner fishing in a pond or lake- I'd love as a poster for my wall). Spall makes Turner brilliant, repellant and sympathetic brilliantly, and as I've mentioned the rest of the cast were superb. Turner's later life is the plot- there are no great twists or reveals, there is character development in response to various situations, and there is a certain sadness at the heart of the film. Maybe I'm a snob but I find these reflective and beautifully filmed movies a welcome reprieve from the glut of brainless action films that floods the cinema all year round, and this one had me absorbed and moved for nearly 3 hours. Recommended.

A must-see for anyone who has ever wondered why artists bother. The film drops us right into the last third of Turner's life, with no introductions or backstories. You have to work out who is who. Turner has wealth, fame, children and social status, but wants none of them. He only wants to look at things and paint them. He could have described himself in the same way as his contemporary Hokusai did, as "an old man mad about art". The film wisely avoids showing us the paintings, so moviegoers should refresh their memories first. The story is faithful to the many legends about Turner, and it has lovingly recreated London between 1825 and 1851. Only two important aspects of Turner are missing: his frequent travels in Europe (hence his Venetian paintings) and his will, which left money to support poor artists but was overturned by his distant cousins.

Spall's Turner grunts and growls, gurgles and wheezes, but the performance could not be more eloquent, revealing the painter in all his contradictions and genius.
