My introduction to Richard Burton and Ava Gardner. I fear I will end up as one of these two characters... lol... dear lord...

This is the peak of John Huston's direction and Richard Burton's and Ava Gardner's acting... That this film doesn't regularly appear in people's top films lists baffles me. Any description of the plot wouldn't do it justice - just watch and enjoy...

There are many films I watch over and over. This is one of them. Its so dense and layered with nuance and meaning that each time is a fresh experience. Burton always does the good hearted, seriously flawed, deeply troubled cynic realist so well

Perhaps the best film I've seen - and every time I watch it again, it seems to be getting better. The inner demons of Rev. Shannon make him lash out on his parish, thus resulting in unemployment. Shannon now conducts group travels to Mexico and is "on his rope's end" when this final trip pushes him over the edge.
