The Night of the Iguana is an incredible film. It is about a defrocked Episcopal clergyman who leads a bus-load of middle-aged Baptist women on a tour of the Mexican coast. Richard Burton and Ava Gardner give excellent performances. The screenplay is good but a little slow in places. John Huston did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama. The Night of the Iguana is a must see.

Maybe I'm a sucker for Williams, but I really dug this movie. It's hard to pinpoint exactly why, but I turned on the TV which had previously been tuned to TCM, (imagine that) and this had just started. Within ten minutes, I knew I was going to stick around to the end. I think it's the fascinating depth in Williams characters. There's always a level deeper than what is being shown, yet his dialogue is often so ambiguous that we are left to fill in the blanks ourselves, making any Williams script an intensely personal experience. Great performances from Gardner, Burton, and surprisingly Sue Lyon, who had me enchanted just like Burton. A complete surprise, and highly recommended.

I had no idea this was based on a Tennesee Williams when I picked it up. Nice to see they didn't edit this one like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

John Huston is an exceptional director, and he directs a first-class cast led by the amazing Richard Burton. Burton's character is extremely interesting, and I like the poetic ending of the story. It's rare that movies seem to plan themselves out so that the ending meets the rest of the story, but when you have a movie based on a play by Tennessee Williams, you can expect that level of sophistication.

One thing that fascinates me about John Huston's body of work is the way he sympathizes with his characters, usually men drowned by sorrow and guilt whose dreams blew up on their faces and now only long for self destruction as the only way out. Yet, this great film is somewhat less pessimistic, more restrained and a lot more hopeful than some of Huston's best exemplifications of inner turmoil. Richard Burton shows once more the brilliant actor he was.
