The Mighty Quinn (1989)

Police chief Xavier Quinn investigates the gruesome murder of Donald Pater, one of the wealthiest residents on a Caribbean island. He was found decapitated in his Jacuzzi. Although the local political establishment, especially crooked Governor Chalk, insists that small-time thief Maubee is responsible, Xavier has his doubts. This view is complicated by the police chief's personal history with Maubee: The men have been friends since childhood.

The Mighty Quinn is not a great movie, perhaps not even a good one, but Denzel's ability to carry the whole story on his shoulders is undeniable and is what stands up in movie. See this movie for what it is and you're set for a nice couple of hours.

I couldn't get past the two shots in this thing. Time after time characters are placed so close together that you expect iguana-length tongues to rocket out and nostril-lick to make a dramatic point. Mimi Rogers does have the sexiest lazy eye in 80s Hollywood film, however.

The movie sparkles with playful tension, bubbles with amiability. The plot is formula, unsurprising, but the film makers and cast seem to be enjoying themselves; their sheer ribald exhilaration becomes infectious.
