Cronenberg's a genius! Despite a piss-poor budget, he manages to hand in an absolutely brilliant and incredibly effective horror/action/thriller. There are some dodgy effects in the film (dodgy, largely in part to the film being made in 1981)... but Cronenberg shows us all how to create tension, menace, revulsion and dread in a film using effective lighting... creative camera angles and through astonishing direction! Michael Ironside does a great job and Patrick McGoohan is brilliant! A GREAT horror classic!

The best exploding head scene captured on film. This film revisits Cronenberg's concern with extra-sensory perception, first articulated in his student films, "Stereo," and "Crimes of the Future." This attests to Cronenberg's integrity.

Like a comicbook movie, done Cronenberg-style. The violence ranges from uncomfortably realistic gunshots wounds to the infamous exploding head. Michael Ironside is an amazing villain, and Patrick McGoohan is also great as the quirky Dr. Ruth.
