Incredible Movie with splendid acting performance and storytelling One of the best biography movie I have ever seen

Perhaps the biggest issue for The Mauritanian is that the screenplay by M.B Traven and Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani tries to accommodate too many protagonists.

Despite a powerful performance by Tahar Rahim in the title role, and despite such marquee names as Jodie Foster and Benedict Cumberbatch in the supporting roles of Slahi’s attorney, Nancy Hollander, and Stu Couch, the Marine lawyer assigned to prosecute him — despite scenes of grotesque abuse that inflame the conscience — the movie lands, through no fault of its own other than timing, with a whiff of been-there, done-that.

The screenplay needed more work and the film in the can a lot more editing to make The Mauritanian worthy of the talent on the set.

This provocative film is based on "Guantánamo Diary" by Mohamedou Ould Slahi. In reaction to 9/11, he was whisked away from his home and imprisoned in Gitmo without any charges. Jodie Foster plays the attorney who volunteers to argue the habeas corpus case against the military prosecutor (Benedict Cumberbatch). Tahar Rahim is cast in the role of Slahi and his creation is warm, sympathetic and resilient. Foster is compelling with calm determination, while Cumberbatch (with a gravelly voice and Southern accent) handles his stance with conviction. Considering that most of this narrative involves lots of research sequences and brief interactions with Slahi, it could have been dull and dry. With the excellent performances and Kevin Macdonald’s steady direction, the drama quietly gains momentum until the gripping final scenes. The inevitable sense of outrage is tempered by Rahim’s inspiring portrayal.
