After hearing KaurismÃ¤ki's name here and there, I decided to check out two of his films. The first was The Match Factory Girl. Already, I can see the style. I loved how minimal and strange this film was. Kati Outinen has maybe a total of thirty seconds of dialogue in the whole 68 minutes and still puts on a show with her stone-faced mannerisms and quirky behavior. I think it was both sad and funny and I didn't expect it to end with her getting caught and taken away . KaurismÃ¤ki seems to habitually linger on the setting after the character(s) leave in this fim, right until the final shot, and his choice of music puts it all over the top. The tone of this reminded me of Roy Andersson's two recent films, and I love those films.

A deeply disturbing and well crafted portrait of a deeply disturbed and unfortunate girl. Powerful storytelling, but the performances are mediocre. With stronger acting, or perhaps better direction, this could have been a great deal more.

A rare occasion when Finnish Director Aki Kaurismäki shows a rather darker side of his film making ... This film slams the male dominated society ... Kati Outinen , yet again conveys more through her silence rather than words and towards the climax thru her actions ....

A near wordless ,minimal movie which lacks the deadpan humour which is normally in Kaurismäki's movies. The titular character's dreary work , dull social life, yearning for companionship, the rejection from parents and suitors... all the emotion (mostly misery) can be read on Kati Outinen's face.

Just wonderful. I've not seen the other 2 films of the trilogy (& now I don't know if I should,) but I'll certainly be on the lookout for future Kaurismaki films.
