Gandhi (1982)

In the early years of the 20th century, Mohandas K. Gandhi, a British-trained lawyer, forsakes all worldly possessions to take up the cause of Indian independence. Faced with armed resistance from the British government, Gandhi adopts a policy of 'passive resistance', endeavouring to win freedom for his people without resorting to bloodshed.

A solid depiction of Gandhi's life with a superb performance by Kingsley. Comes across more as a documentary then motion length picture - cinematography and screenplay raise the level beyond simple biography.

Classic movie with top actors, especially Ben Kingsley. The story is beautiful, because the results of Gandhi are legendary.

I watched this movie today, and cried at the end...first time I've cried watching a movie in about 10 years.

I didn't watch this movie for the camera angles or the composition of the shot - I watched it to learn about Gandhi. All I knew of Gandhi as a child was Ben Kingsley's depiction of him, and I can now see why. He was absolutely stunning in his portrayal, yet I have to still wonder what Gandhi was really like. It's funny that almost my entire understanding of this great man (and the history of India and Pakistan, for that matter) centers around this film. Watching the movie inspires me to learn more about Gandhi, but I'm a little saddened that I find myself so ignorant about what he did for his country and for the world.

If The Godfather is the best American film ever made, this movie may be the best British film ever made. And it's not even set (primarily) in Britain. I love, love, love this movie. It is Richard Attenborough's 5th film, although his first of any note, and certainly his best. Ben Kingsley has never been better. Everyone should see this film.
