Loved the genre, screenplay could have been more exploratory. Why a millennial son would be so upset over a parental affair is beyond me.

In a sense, Jacobs has made a movie about sex that’s not about sex at all. We often hear about “sexual sublimation,” but The Lovers depicts the reverse, which is probably more common, in which sexual adventure becomes the most available substitute for cherished lost dreams.

David Sims 15 May 2017

The Lovers, written and directed by Azazel Jacobs, is a strangely gripping movie mostly because of its aversion to over-explaining.

Melissa Anderson 01 May 2017

Jacobs lets casually observed details and offhand humor advance the story. There are no grand pronouncements in The Lovers, which smartly communicates its ideas about relationships during its long stretches of silence.

Noah Gittell 11 May 2017

We experience The Lovers as its characters live their lives: teetering on the precipice, reveling in uncertainty, and loving every moment of it.
