The Loved One (1965)

Newly arrived in Hollywood from England, Dennis Barlow finds he has to arrange his uncle's interment at the highly-organised and very profitable Whispering Glades funeral parlour. His fancy is caught by one of their cosmeticians, Aimee Thanatogenos. But he has three problems - the strict rules of owner Blessed Reverand Glenworthy, the rivalry of embalmer Mr Joyboy, and the shame of now working himself at The Happy Hunting Ground pets' memorial home.

Well a Mash like black comedy, just as good as Doctor Strangelove and very underrated. The acting is wonderful by all. Liberace is very surprising good as the soft spoken sleaze bag undertaker trying to sell every possible high price item and when you balk, that sneer contemptuous, "very good". You know, like at a snooty restaurant with a friend and you only order the salad and water because you really aren't hungry and the waiter thinks you are cheap. The racketeering like funeral business, the greed, the greed of cemeteries run by big corporations, the brain washed delight of a dysfunctional staff that enjoys the gruesome work as if they are creating great works of art in marble may not be for everyone. Lovely, lovely scenes especially of the cemetery. Now if they can just figure out a way to get those stiffs off the reverend's proprietary.

Dark and funny satire of Forest Lawn and the heirarchy of dying. One great star after another appears delightfully cast throughout, the film is ultimately a lethal stab at Los Angeles artificiality.

One of those odd little 60s flicks with a cast to match. What used to be called a "black comedy", if I remember correctly. Still a strange and interesting watch, even today.

Blech! I only made it through 50% of the movie.

Terrible print in circulation but that cannot hide the telling satire sop brutally garnered by Rod Steiger and Robert Morse.
