The Lost Bladesman (2011)

During the warring period of the three kingdoms, ancient China is in turmoil. To unify the country, general Cao Cao, the real power behind the Emperor, enlists the aid of the greatest warrior in the land, Guan Yu. However, Guan Yu is a loyal friend of Cao Cao's enemy Liu Bei so to persuade the peerless warrior to fight, Cao Cao takes his beloved Qi Lan hostage. After leading Cao Cao's forces to victory Guan Yu sets out with Qi Lan to rejoin Liu Bei. Now Cao Cao has deemed him too great a threat to live, and on the journey he must face all the forces at the Emperor's command sent to destroy him.

I really like Donnie Yen, but this was a really bad movie. Having said that, I thought the Cao Cao character was interesting. Sadly, this is one of those horrible "martial arts" movies where the hero fends off half the known universe, then the other half, and then an extra half---all while he has been poisoned. It's just so absurd that it transcends symbolism into total ridiculousness. Wave upon wave upon wave---every able bodied young man in China---attack this guy. They can't even shoot him, at a distance, with arrows flying right and left. It's just boring. Get a life, Donnie.

Even with Donnie Yen's fantastic martial art skills, especially with authentic ancient weaponry, this movie falls short of being a martial-arts beauty seen in Ip man or being an epic movie seen in Red Cliff. Although it has solid acting and well crafted real fighting, the lack of substance in the plot, along with the abuse of slow sentimental scenes, The Lost Bladesman does not achieve the glory it has aimed for. It is entertaining, but it does not represent the might of the genre, as hard as it tries.

An epic historical martial arts film with thin characters, a tepid love story and some excellent fight sequences with the long-handled crescent-moon blade.

There's something really robust about actually seeing a fight rather than the cutaways and the illusion of a fight rather than a real fight.
