The Losers (1970)

Some bikers are hired by the CIA during the Vietnam War to rescue a captured agent from the clutches of the Red Chinese army. After a round of drinking, fighting, and whoring around, the cycle gang, led by Big Bill Smith, fix up their Yamahas with machine guns, grenades and armor plating, and storm the enemy camp.

America sends a motorcycle gang into Cambodia to rescue a CIA agent during the Vietnam War. Why send trained men on an important mission when you can get bikers. A great premise but execution somewhat lacking.

A fascinating watch of one of only a few films about the Viet Nam War shot while the war was in full-motion.

The conceit is great -- the US Army sends in a gang of bikers to Cambodia to essentially win the war. With that premise, I thought it was going to be over the top schlocky, but it was actually very earnest in its comments on the Vietnam War and what that war entailed. And it did it 8 or 9 years before any of the major acclaimed films of the era had the balls to. The film isn't perfect and sure there are hilariously out of place scenes such as the reuniting of lovers complete with deafening music in the background, but there is a sincerity behind the film that really endeared it to me. I also would like to categorize it as a weird blend of exploitation and a precursor to action/war films of the 70s and 80s.

** (out of four) A very strange film indeed, helped along by the appearance of William Smith. The U.S. government hand picks 5 Hell's Angels to be dropped in the middle of Cambodia to help with the War.
