I'm surprised there are so few views on the original film of the franchise. Not as dark as the book. But still not the hyper-patronage of other films that followed it in the '80s. No clear bad-guys, everyone makes mistakes and has their own viewpoint. Far more realistic situations than the next two sequels. And only one bodycount!!!

Made in 1982.Whe Vietnam War veteran John Rambo comes to a small town to visit a war compadre he is clearly not wanted in this sleepy little town by the local Police and is escorted out the town,he walks back into the town and gets arrested for it,he then escapes arrest and huge Man Hunt is down on him,he has to fend for himself in the local woods while giving The local police 'A War they wont believe',this movie deals with the hero removed from the war trying to reintegrate back into civilized society and not being accepted and i feel we can all relte to Rambo's character in a way,this film cemented Stallone as an Action Hero and By far this is my favorite action movie of the 80's John Rambo is an all around badass, The film's climax reveals the film as a tragedy and shows how good Stallone can act, an Action Movie Classic. Many Action movies to follow owe a debt to this film.

Not as much action as the other films in the series, but had the most substance. Touched on the plight of veterans from the Vietnam War. Rambo both kicks butt and shows some cunning (as opposed to the mindless point-and-shoot that characterized the later Rambo movies). Ultimately, it is the Colonel (played by Richard Crenna) who had the best performance in this film. His monologue describing Rambo when he first meets the sheriff is probably one of the best all-time movie speeches.
