Kitchen Stories (2003)

Swedish efficiency researchers come to Norway for a study of Norwegian men, to optimize their use of their kitchen. Folke Nilsson (Tomas Norström) is assigned to study the habits of Isak Bjørvik (Joachim Calmeyer). By the rules of the research institute, Folke has to sit on an umpire's chair in Isak's kitchen and observe him from there, but never talk to him. Isak stops using his kitchen and observes Folke through a hole in the ceiling instead. However, the two lonely men slowly overcome the initial post-war Norwegian-Swede distrust and become friends.

This is another one of those ones that should be boring but I liked it anyways. Sort of an anthropology thing.

The film is saying that, left to their own devices, all men would devolve into a morass of monastic grouches. Kitchen Stories is a prime piece of comic anthropology.

The film explores deeper issues of human relationships -- how can someone truly be a detached observer? How much can one learn about another without speaking or interacting with them?

Folke and Isak have nowhere near the dimensions of the pair in "Waiting for Godot" or in "Endgame," but on his level, Hamer follows Beckett's belief that, especially in an odd situation, two can make a multitude.

This is a slow burn with lots of little mood swings that take some understanding and patience to grasp under the surface. I enjoyed it the first time I watched it, and even more the next few times. Just nice people trying to work and live there lives in the cold impersonal world of 1950s Scandinavian. SKOL!
