Kitchen Stories (2003)

Swedish efficiency researchers come to Norway for a study of Norwegian men, to optimize their use of their kitchen. Folke Nilsson (Tomas Norström) is assigned to study the habits of Isak Bjørvik (Joachim Calmeyer). By the rules of the research institute, Folke has to sit on an umpire's chair in Isak's kitchen and observe him from there, but never talk to him. Isak stops using his kitchen and observes Folke through a hole in the ceiling instead. However, the two lonely men slowly overcome the initial post-war Norwegian-Swede distrust and become friends.

Fantastic deadpan comedy with a strong warm humanist streak. Set in the 50s, Swedish "kitchen science" researchers observe the kitchen habits of Norwegian single men in order to make kitchen layouts more efficient. This gloriously absurd premise creates some wonderful moments of dry humour as the rearchers subject, a cantankerous old man, makes it as hard as possible for the observer, even turning the tables and spying on him. The informal, scientific methods gradually turn to close friendship between the pair. One of those lovely, feel-good films you're glad to have discovered.
