"The King," like its subject, is an incomplete work. What's here is interesting and, for the most part, entertaining. But Jarecki always leaves you feeling a bit cheated.

Chris Barsanti 24 Jun 2018

By the time Jarecki is done with Elvis, the lanky and projects-raised rockabilly kid ... has been cast as everything from an opportunist and grasping capitalist to addled addict to just plain sucker.

Dorothy Woodend 07 Aug 2018

There isn't a whole lot there that we haven't already eaten and digested a few times over. It's far more interesting to look forward... Elvis is really dead, and it's time to let him go.

Nigel Andrews 21 Aug 2018

The King is exhilarating because it doesn't do "truth". It does Tom Wolfe-style free association and play of ideas, of which surely the best is that the King was King Kong reborn.

Mark Kennedy 19 Jun 2018

What could have been a gentle, personal travelogue is reworked and reworked until it's often guilty of the last sin of Elvis - excess.
