What we get is closer to early Vegas Elvis – a little bloated and befuddled, and not as light on his feet as he needs to be.

A metaphor in search of a movie, it's an incoherent chop suey of big ideas and overfamiliar biography, positioning Elvis as a representation of everything and nothing all at once.

Ray Pride 19 Jul 2018

A fitting film to have Errol Morris, Steven Soderbergh and Roseanne Cash as executive producers: a slippery discourse about music, meaning and moment seen through the figure of one of the great tricksters of "strange old America."

Robert Denerstein 19 Jul 2018

The difference: Much of The King proves interesting and some [of] it, even salient. That's because The King is as much about the kingdom as it is about Elvis's pop-cultural royalty.

Throughout The King, you can feel Jarecki desperately working, slicing, trying to make connections. What could have been a gentle, personal travelogue is reworked and reworked until it’s often guilty of the last sin of Elvis — excess.
