Absence of Malice (1981)

Megan Carter is a reporter duped into running an untrue story on Michael Gallagher, a suspected racketeer. He has an alibi for the time his crime was allegedly committed—but it involves an innocent party. When he tells Carter the truth and the newspaper runs it, tragedy follows, forcing Carter to face up to the responsibilities of her job when she is confronted by Gallagher.

Wilford Brimley manages to steal the show with about a total of 10 minutes of screen time. Sally Field is simply too likable for Megan, a naive, somewhat ignorant reporter who can't help but print every single thing she finds.

Interesting and thought provoking movie about the power and abuse of the press, who really receives a serious slap in the face in this one. To me the weaknesses came from the starring duo (despite Field really convinces as a very silly/innocent journalist with an incredible sense of irresponsability) and the often hard to believe plot. But interesting nevertheless.

*** (out of four) Superbly acted by Sally Field and Paul Newman, and Melinda Dillon, and director by Sidney Pollack, "Absence of Malice" offers a fairly routine plot and delivery but is saved by the cast. Field plays an ambitious newspaper reporter who is investigating a story that leads her Newman, a man with mob connections.

A wildly overwritten melodrama about the sins of the press. Newman's character is compelling, but Field's reporter is such a lamebrain that we know she would be fired at any major newspaper. [25 Dec 1981]
