Absence of Malice (1981)

Megan Carter is a reporter duped into running an untrue story on Michael Gallagher, a suspected racketeer. He has an alibi for the time his crime was allegedly committed—but it involves an innocent party. When he tells Carter the truth and the newspaper runs it, tragedy follows, forcing Carter to face up to the responsibilities of her job when she is confronted by Gallagher.

Interesting movie about the press and ethics, leaks and investigations. A rather weak plot that is made up for by great acting and a very sweet looking sally field! Wouldn't recommend it for a saturday night though!

Paul Newman and Sally Field give excellent performances in this film. This movie also has an interesting supporting cast. The plot revolves around the ethics of reporting among other things. If you are a fan of Newman's or Field's then you must check out this film.

this film at one point i imagine must have been quite good but now is very very dated. the performances were passable with the exception of the excellent bob balaban who WASNT soft spoken and quirky for once! i did not see one quark of chemistry between paul newman and sally field

'Suppose you picked up this morning's newspaper and your life was a front page headline... And everything they said was accurate... But none of it was true.' Sally Field and Paul Newman, who was nominated for an Oscar, are both very good, as is the supporting cast of Bob Balaban (Seinfeld) and Wilfred Brimley, but as a story its kind of confusing and slow...
