Absence of Malice (1981)

Megan Carter is a reporter duped into running an untrue story on Michael Gallagher, a suspected racketeer. He has an alibi for the time his crime was allegedly committed—but it involves an innocent party. When he tells Carter the truth and the newspaper runs it, tragedy follows, forcing Carter to face up to the responsibilities of her job when she is confronted by Gallagher.

Wilford Brimley manages to steal the show with about a total of 10 minutes of screen time. Sally Field is simply too likable for Megan, a naive, somewhat ignorant reporter who can't help but print every single thing she finds.

Go off and see it! I think TBS or one of the other stations has been running it every hour for the last week. Sometimes I have been disappointed with Sydney Pollack but I loved this film...maybe Paul Newman saved it for me.

"Absence of Malice" features a quiet, but effective performance from Paul Newman and is a great comment on the media industry, but the screenplay does not allow much to happen causing the film to grow a bit dull.

A great journalism drama/thriller with great actors, it's even pretty exciting for the most part. If you like movies about journalism, I highly recommend it.

Reporter Sally Field gets used for other people's self-interests. Paul Newman gets smeared in a paper and gets even. Good to watch if you're having an I-feel-like-a-victim day.
