Absence of Malice (1981)

Megan Carter is a reporter duped into running an untrue story on Michael Gallagher, a suspected racketeer. He has an alibi for the time his crime was allegedly committed—but it involves an innocent party. When he tells Carter the truth and the newspaper runs it, tragedy follows, forcing Carter to face up to the responsibilities of her job when she is confronted by Gallagher.

Interesting script, quality cast, and great editing. Well worth a few award nominations.

The best scene is at the end, when the federal prosecutor, played by Wilford Brimley fixes everything.

a tad bit dated but Paul Newman is still as excellent as ever. kept me guessing til the end.

This movie was entertaining enough. I liked it. But the real draw was seeing Sally Field in her bra. I literally creamed my shorts when I saw that. And she's such a sweet lady but has this edgy vixen side to her... Oh God! Excuse me, I uh, need to uh, take a shower.

*** (out of four) Superbly acted by Sally Field and Paul Newman, and Melinda Dillon, and director by Sidney Pollack, "Absence of Malice" offers a fairly routine plot and delivery but is saved by the cast. Field plays an ambitious newspaper reporter who is investigating a story that leads her Newman, a man with mob connections.
