Going into Brian Knappenberger's documentary, I had a passing knowledge of who Aaron Swartz was but I hadn't looked or considered what the young genius had brought not only to the internet community but to the way we interact with technology. His is a story of a young genius who wanted to make the world a better place through technology and who, at every step, was resisted by the corporations that look to make money off of technology. Though on the long side, Knappenberger's documentary is well worth a look and the last 20 minutes are a gut punch.

Well worth watching. Substantive without being tedious, this movie tells a very moving story of an idealistic young prodigy whose life became tragically entangled with some of the more pernicious social forces of his time. In the process, it both humanizes someone who could too easily have been memorialized as a cliched martyr, while also drawing attention to serious political issues. Like many documentaries, it could probably have benefitted from slightly tighter editing and can veer into preachiness at times; given the story it tells, though, that seems somewhat justified. Although it will be of particular interest to those interested in the internet and civil liberties, it may even be more important for those not already engaged with those topics to help them understand why they should be. With loud echoes of The Apology, this film is a compelling, classically tragic true story of how a society falls prey to a toxic blend of ignorance and paranoia and in the process destroys its most gifted members.

The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz simmers with sadness, cynicism and starkness yet never once turns its back on the celebrated digital-aged declaration in a chosen soul out to right the wrong and mince politics with printout sheets.

Surely Aaron was the prophet of our digital age. He showed us a better world where information was not limited to the elites of the world but should be free for all people to better themselves and society. If you don't get it... That's fine... It just means you lack the insight into the changes that are coming over the next several generations... And anyone that says bleeding liberal blah blah blah then I would say crawl back under your rock because you've been blindsided by people who seek to marginalise your voice... They pursued Aaron because his ideas had the potential to rock the establishment to the core and they crushed him before he could show everyone the establishment is just an illusion in a digital world. We need more people like Aaron and the world is less illuminated without him.
