German Cinema at its best. Gorgeous lighting and cinematography; open thoughts and feelings; insight and originality. Excellent acting and dialogue. My favorite movie.

In the vein of sister-brother-other love triangles on film (like Bertolucci's "The Dreamers") set in a lost time (the late Weimar Republic in this case). But where it departs from such meditations on doomed romance, this is also a reflection on idealism, innocence, poetry and the destiny of the right moment when individuals surrender to the power of sensations. In essence like a Greek tragedy on film. Everything plays out over one weekend in the countryside outside Berlin. In atmospherics - mist over a lake, naturalistic shots of the moon, fog, bodies - this resembles the film "Sirens". Based on the 'true story' of a murder-suicide pact - as written in the book by Arno Kuingdorf. The German title "Was nÃ¼tzt die Liebe in Gedanken" is the better one: "What use is love only in thoughts?"
