A new technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius. The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. Lone CIA analyst Jack Ryan has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it - because the entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find Ramius, too. The hunt is on!

All time best Sean Connery role since From Russia With Love.

Superbly crafted political thriller, thanks to a smart script, taunt direction by McTiernan and an excellent cast. Connery is superb as Cap. Ramius, giving real gravitas to the role, playing an experienced navy commander who has grown tired of the Cold War, while Baldwin is still the best Jack Ryan to date, giving the perfect mix of intelligence and everyman to the role. Behind the camera, John McTieran crafts a slick, intelligent thriller that perfectly adapts the Tom Clancy novel, and quite frankly might be better. The subplot of only Ryan believing Ramius is trying to defect adds an extra level of tension, along with agency for Ryan, while the political scenes give a nice mix of levity and humor. The action scenes are first rate and nail-biting, especially in the innovative way they are done with Cold War politics (for example, an American sub can't fire on a Russian one since they are not technically at war. The best adaptation of a Tom Clancy novel and best Cold war thriller ever made.

This is a classic for a good reason. Alec Baldwin plays CIA analyst Jack Ryan who is responsible for tracking Sean Connery, a rouge Soviet submarine captain. The dialogue and plot had me engaged from start to finish. You could just feel the cold war tension on screen. Strong cast really delivered. Sam Neil and Scott Glenn give solid supporting performances. Sean Connery gives a fantastic perfomance that only he could give and Alec Baldwin makes me wish he got another chance to play Jack Ryan. Love the simpler action scenes from these older movies where you can actually follow what is happening on screen.

Fantastic movie and Clancy's adaptation with better Jack Ryan. I like Harrison Ford but Ryan impersonated by him is far less convincible as Baldwin's. Connery shines throughout.
