Seance on a Wet Afternoon (1964)

Working-class British housewife Myra Savage reinvents herself as a medium, holding seances in the sitting room of her home with the hidden assistance of her under-employed, asthmatic husband, Billy. In an attempt to enhance her credibility as a psychic, Myra hatches an elaborate, ill-conceived plot to kidnap a wealthy couple's young daughter so that she can then help the police "find" the missing girl.

Moody and dark film about a medium and her husband who kidnap a child to bring attention to her "powers." Phenomenal performances by Kim Stanley & Richard Attenborough make this a must see. Great black & white photography by Gerry Turpin and a effective score by John Barry make this one of Bryan Forbes best films. Forbes did some amazing work in the 1960s.

Excellent suspenseful film, I knew nothing about it before I saw it, so I was completely surpised when the story unfolded. Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough were both incredible in it. Attenborough's retrieving of the ransom money was very intense. I wish this film had gotten more recognition, it was a pretty dark film, considering it was made in 64.

If there is one thing I've learned from films like Gone Baby Gone and Ransom and Jack the Bear and Man On Fire, it is that when you're kidnapping a child, everything that can go wrong will go wrong. Seance on a Wet Afternoon offers no exception to that rule. Don't let the title fool you, this one is more suspense than horror, though it has a few elements of the latter. Kim Stanley is creepishly wonderful as the disturbed medium and Richard Attenborough's submissive husband character is spot-on. For a film that I caught quite by accident, with no preconceived notions or high expectations, I was pleasantly surprised. This is a movie on par with better known genre gems like Diabolique and Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte.

Reminded me of Hitchcock. This is a character drama, with some great acting and long, absorbing takes. The plot was only average, though.

Absolute classic, well written, well shot, well lit and brilliantly acted. Its the type of film that makes me love B&W movies.
