Cool concept and had some pretty creepy moments. And the set pieces were great.

Ultimately one big haunted house attraction that involves 5 people on a road trip looking to find the scariest haunted house before halloween ends. Well, they get what they bargained for. Given the fact that it delivers effective thrills and jumps, its pretty clever to execute a story out of what people go out looking for (fear and excitement) and take you through the entire experience as if you're apart of the tour. The originality is impressive, but the flaws mainly consist of dumb choices that offered many opportunities to gtfo, and unless youre easily frightened by all things popping out randomly it begins to jusf be something to expect leaving very little room for a surprise element. overall, check it out. Its a great watch during this time of year, and those easily vulnerable to terror will definitely get one hell of a dose here!

The found-footage horror subgenre has proved surprisingly durable and flexible for what at first seemed a one-note gimmick. But for every â??Paranormal Activity,â?? â??[REC]â?? or â??V/H/Sâ?? that breathes new life into the form, thereâ??s two or three along the lines of â??The Houses October Built,â?? freshly hatched yet tiresome as a tenth re-watch of â??The Blair Witch Project.â??

For fans of horror looking for increasingly more intense thrills, the story will hit home, but will not deliver on those thrills. As a concept, the story is terrifying. Especially coming after the many extreme haunted houses popping up around the country, you will wonder where you would draw the line. The acting is wonderfully authentic, feeling like an actual road trip between friends, driven by one man's quest to be truly frightened. Presented as found-footage, the movie delivers by steering away from shaky cams but leaving you to wonder, who edited this? Once the credits roll, you will definitely be questioning what exactly just happened. This gives the movie a reason for a rewatch, but the second viewing may bring the film down more than it lifts it up. All in all, a feeling many a horror fan has had matched with some creepy carnies make for an enjoyably chilling, albeit forgettable, found footage movie.

This is a somewhat tiresome found-footage excursion admirable in how it came together, and disappointing that it couldn't have added up to more than it ultimately does.
