The Hospital (1971)

Dr. Bock, the chief of medicine at a Manhattan hospital, is suicidal after the collapse of his personal life. When an intern is found dead in a hospital bed, it appears to Bock to be a case of unforgivable malpractice. Hours later, another doctor, who happens to be responsible for another case of malpractice, is found dead. Despondent, Bock finds himself drawn to Barbara, the daughter of a comatose missionary.

This blisteringly cynical satire, written by Paddy Chayefsky, is one of the darkest movies ever made, a cold-eyed lament for a society torn apart by upheavals of the Sixties.

For sure some dark humor and it worked. George C Scott was excellent in this role and I did enjoy seeing little bit parts of actors who would become famous in later years (Stockard Channing spoke maybe 5-6 words and there was Mrs Christie who would go on to become Tony Soprano's mom). The Hospital is chaotic with everyone spiralling down into some farcical place and there's Paddy Chayefsky's fingerprints everywhere.

Somehow the cosmos arranged for me to see this 1971 film during our country's attempt to come to reform our medical system. A forerunner to Network, this Chayefsky screenplay is absolutely scathing. As loony as the premise of this film is, it's so intelligent and well done. George C. Scott is brilliant as he portrays a complicated man trying to find his way in what he thinks is an empty world. I had never heard of this film, but it's worth knowing about.

George C. Scott is amazing, but with a half-hour left, this movie takes a turn to What-the-fuck-ville.

Disturbing, but really compelling in a frightening way. George C. Scott is his usual combative, anti-heroic self and he is so broken and cynical that it is easier to be viscerally repelled than it is to like him. Diana Rigg is a surprise and her performance leaves you wondering how she avoided being one of the premier film actresses of the '70s and '80s (she was busy being one of the premier stage actresses of the '70s and '80s, at least in England). This movie is not for the faint of heart or those seeking a feel-good movie, but it is surprisingly resonant with the health care crises we face today. I'm still not sure if this is an "issues" movie or a George C. Scott vehicle, but in the end it doesn't matter. See it.
