Mildred Pierce is a film that defies typical genre classification for its era.

The ultimate melodrama with Crawford at her best. A sharp- tongued Eve Arden as the best pal leavens the drama. They cleaned up the MP character for the movie: she's a lot less principled in the novel. But everything works here, from the opening gunshots to the final fadeout.

Crawford's comeback performance after a few years in the doldrum's this was a classic part which may well have been written for her. Good supporting cast too especially Eve Arden as the cynnical best friend and Ann Blyth as the socially ambitious, obnoxious slut of a daughter. Powerful stuff.
