The plot is the simplest: On Christmas morning, Gawain dreams of being knighted by the elderly King Arthur. Encouraged by his mother Morgana to attend the reception at the court of Camelot, the dissolute young man witnesses the arrival of the mysterious and imposing Green Knight, who tests the court. Gawain offers to take up his challenge and therefore can hit him first, but a year later he will have to go to a remote church to receive the blow back. Gawain beheads the creature, but it takes its head back and repeats its prophecy, which now sounds like a death sentence. The boy is knighted and passes a year of wicked pleasures, but the new Christmas is approaching. This film is the best chivalrous epic film I have ever seen and undoubtedly one of the best films of recent years. The best one by Lowery.

This being a Lowery tale, the monolithic, the overwhelming, are only more powerful for being rendered in intimate, miniaturized terms. The creepiness creeps just that much more; fear is heightened; fantasies, mysteries tingle with a sense of the unpredictable.

The Green Knight is many things—hypnotic, cryptic, dramatic, occasionally funny, certainly poetic and often magical in its way—but simple isn’t one of them.

The Green Knight both deconstructs and compiliments its source material, making it feel at once modern and a classic in the making. Filled with scene after scene of overwhelmingly gorgeous visuals and sensual overload. The costumes, cinematography, set/art direction, original score, visuals, atmosphere, pacing, and a handful of Oscar worthy performances (Patel, Vikander, and Ineson especially) make for an intoxicating and hypnotic fever dream that wont be for everyone looking for a more fast paced, action packed, epic. But if you want a film experience that will wash over you and mesmerize you while never quite sure where the story is taking you, you wont be disappointed. This is definitely David Lowerey's crowning achievement, and unlike anything else on screen right now. Dav Patel though, god, such a gorgeous man.
