Charlie Kaufman is a confused L.A. screenwriter overwhelmed by feelings of inadequacy, sexual frustration, self-loathing, and by the screenwriting ambitions of his freeloading twin brother Donald. While struggling to adapt "The Orchid Thief," by Susan Orlean, Kaufman's life spins from pathetic to bizarre. The lives of Kaufman and Orlean's book become strangely intertwined as each one's search for passion collides with the other's.

Bold and original. It blurs the line between reality and fiction and makes us rethink what movies are and what they could be. It gives us a glimpse into Kaufman's life and then gives us a caustic, unreal ending. It offers no real redemption for Charlie, (we get the sense that after 2/3rds of the way in nothing is real anymore) but I found it refreshing because it mocks unreal Hollywood happy-endings with good humor and intelligence. A weird and wonderful movie.

Fantastically original. Nic Cage actually delivers a solid performance as his own twin, but I think Chris Cooper is my favorite part of this film.

To try and explain the nuances and depths of Adaptation is a daunting task. But to recommend and plead that you see this film is not.

I was ready to call this film my favorite Kaufman flick that I've seen so far, but then the end happened. I loved this film, and then the brothers went to Florida. Don't get me wrong, I get what happens in this movie, and I really enjoyed watching the meta-level writing unfold, but the ending was a major let-down after it led up to such other great heights. Its a great movie, don't get me wrong. It was one of the most interesting scripts I've ever seen performed. I just wish it ended differently.
