The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden (2014)

Darwin meets Hitchcock in this documentary. Directors Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine have created a parable about the search for paradise, set in the brutal yet alluring landscape of the Galapagos Islands, which interweaves an unsolved 1930s murder mystery with stories of present day Galapagos pioneers. A gripping tale of idealistic dreams gone awry, featuring voice-over performances by Cate Blanchett, Diane Kruger, and Gustaf Skarsgard.

All of this is fascinating in the moment, yet the doc never yokes all these threads into anything particularly deep or illuminating. The Galapagos Affair is less social commentary, more gossip.

The Galapagos Affair would be a much stronger film were it not padded with the dull reminiscences and speculation of the settlers’ descendants.

Adding more sources to the story don’t illuminate it, they extend it to no avail, turning a 90 minute movie into two hours that still don’t make the informed guessing more informed, or more entertaining.

A few people go to the Galapagos islands to live away from civilization. A few years later most of them turn up dead or missing. This unique documentary is comprised of the actual accounts of the participants read from their journals and other sources, LOTS of film footage and photographs. And also interviews with current residents of the islands to better understand their way of life. I loved it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Fascinating, if laboriously-titled true story with exotic locale, heated rivalries, a sexually rapacious Baroness and voice-overs by Blanchett, Kruger and Nielsen.
