The directors include interviews with descendants of the original settlers and with later arrivals — too much so, actually, as the lengthy scenes interrupt the flow of the mystery. But they don't derail it. The story is too lurid, too rich, too compelling.

Strauch’s orotund prose sounds much like that of Werner Herzog, but without the irony. Herzog’s sensibility is missed here; he could have made a masterpiece about the absurdity of these deluded seekers of Eden.

A European couple's escape from the hustle and bustle of civilization to a life of seclusion in one of the previously uninhabited Galapagos islands takes a turn when others move in. Drama, crime and intrigue ensue. Though at times difficult to watch, this movie serves as a good exposition of the charms and pitfalls of small island life.

"Paradise isn't place you can find on this is earth. It doesn't exist, at best it's a condition." A very haunting documentary about a couple who attempted to do just that. While the effort wasn't a complete failure for all party involved; paradise is subjective.

Despite The Galapagos Affair's bloated runtime, clocking in at a shade over two hours, the two-thirds of the film that is good is a very compelling illustration of the inescapability of human nature and the constraints of society.
