Very weird movie about a kid who's obsessed with a video showing the killing of a pig. He then lashes out and things quickly descend into madness. This movie is pretty casual about it's showing of violence but not without any purpose. The casual references to American culture and Benny's obsession with them aren't coincidental either. This reminded me of the case in 1992 which scared the shit out of me and every 12 year old at my school. The case of the two British boys who abducted a toddler and brutally murdered him. It was someone our own age committing murder in a very casual and curious manner. This movie came out shortly afterward. I figured this movie was maybe inspired by those events but they happened afterward. Instead this movie is just prolific.

Disturbing, but worthwhile. I found Benny's final act in a way more brutal than the murder. This is still as provocative and enduring as any of Haneke's later work. Highly recommended!

As always, Haneke delivers with this critique of capitalism and family. Asking more questions than answering, the viewer is left wondering exactly what Benny's Video says, what (if anything) Benny feels, and if perhaps, Benny can edit his memories as easily as he edits his videos.

A very disturbing and intriging first hour, but the third act drags alot. However, Haneke always says very interesting things about the connection between violence and media, but he has made better.
