In this story-within-a-story, Anna is an actress starring opposite Mike in a period piece about the forbidden love between their respective characters, Sarah and Charles. Both actors are involved in serious relationships, but the passionate nature of the script leads to an off-camera love affair as well. While attempting to maintain their composure and professionalism, Anna and Mike struggle to come to terms with their infidelity.

I actually enjoyed this movie a lot more than I expected to. It's a little confusing at first, but trust me, it's amazing! A breathtaking portrayal of how art imitates life.

No idea why this is an "R" rating - it is ageing a bit and I preferred the movie of Possession, but think this was a sreenplay triumph. I found Irons the movie actor unconvincing - but the rest was very real. In this movie, love is passed from one character to another like a virus for a type of madness. Two parallel stories leave an impact!

A great period piece with remarkable performances by Jeremy Irons and Meryl Streep. While the time shifting and two endings may be confusing at first, the film does make it work. If you are in to period pieces or are a Meryl Streep fan at all, this is definitely worth a watch.

Based on a Victorian romance novel with a notoriously open-ended conclusion. The author gave readers three different endings to the story, so screenwriter Harold Pinter (yep) takes an interesting tack and retains that same ambiguity in a neatly meta- way. In addition to the traditional story, there's a concurrent story that follows the two protagonists (Irons and Streep, both great) as actors on the set of the movie version OF the original Victorian story. While the period romance sticks pretty close to form, the present day actors-in-tragic-love parallel really makes things interesting, especially as the two plots collide and become inextricably entwined in the last twenty minutes or so. A really unique work.
