Saw this movie at a film festival about 2 years ago. Has a similar vibe as the movie Hoosiers but more intense because of ever looming threat of the secret police

... an awkward mix of sports underdog saga and political thriller, yet even when its edges are soft instead of sharp, the crowd-pleasing result provides depth and historical insight.

It's the kids, as charming and scrappy a bunch as you'd find anywhere, who give The Fencer its winning edge.

A competition in Leningrad is the climax of Finnish director Klaus Haro's handsomely shot drama, but what endures is the churning, ever present fear the decimated community lives with.

The true story of an Estonian sports hero offers a lovely twist on a familiar tale. A cinematic triumph from a nation that's been missing from the global film stage.
