The Escape (2017)

A woman and a child – two people saved by the remembrance. An apocalyptic annihilation has happened in their world. Afterimages of those traumatic events interfere the perception of reality. Woman and child are haunted by a constant sense of insecurity and danger. The surrounding world gives them no chance for the survival. Main characters exist, but as if they were dead. They meet, but they can't see each other. They only live in those blurred by the time images of human memory.

White it's not a perfect movie and has some flaws, essentially its pretty excellent both acting and story wise. Gemma Arterton is awesome and so is Dominic Cooper and they occupy the majority of the movie. It's a story that needs to be told. Not everyone wants the same suburban life that is thrust upon us as if there are no alternatives to the stereotypical family life. This perspective has been portrayed before in movies, Revolutionary Road comes to mind. The characters are always torn because they believe there is something wrong with them rather than the flawed stereotypical married with children life we're expected to both wholly accept and admire.

Only a brave filmmaker-and even braver actors-would attempt to tackle one of the most vexing questions of contemporary life: Why is "having it all" not quite enough?

James Croot 04 Jul 2018

Arterton in particular is a revelation, delivering a finely nuanced, yet powerhouse performance that deserves to be seen by as wide an audience as possible.

Ian Freer 29 Jul 2018

The Escape is not a comfortable watch. But it is a rewarding one, thanks to Dominic Savage's forensic investigation of a disintegrating marriage and career-best work by Gemma Arterton.

Filipe Freitas 03 Sep 2018

Despite Arterton's outstanding performance, the film weakens considerably in its last section...This undeniable decrescendo of enthrallment tells us that The Escape is a fair drama that could have been better.
