A great movie where cops and robbers is equated with team sports, but instead of numbers the players are given names; The Driver, The Detective, etc. O' Neal is great as the mysterious driver and Dern is fantastic as the gung ho detective. In fact, this is one of the few movies where I wasn't certain what characters would do. There is one scene at the end where a main character is holding a gun to another character and I was actually not sure if he was going to murder him. A great Walter Hill film.

A classic film Noir. Although its plot is really close to Melville's Samourai and the driver's role was written for Steve McQueen, The movie Driver and Ryan Oneal do not have anything less than the original, I think they even have more to offer. A must see, a must have for me.

A bit dated, but still pretty cool. the sript is almost non-existent, such was the lack of dialogue. But the car chases set the standard for Hollywood.

Some say Walter Hill's "The Driver" is far too boring and dialogue free to be a fully engaging experience. I ask, why do we need to know the background of "The Driver"? The film is a tribute to the noir genre from the 40's and 50's. And you must expect that the lead character is going to be mysterious, and yes.... Sometimes the dialogue is stiff, and the actors are hard nosed and less emotional than we see in action movies. Simply put... It's about a battle of two wills. A cat and mouse game between a criminal and a cop if you will. The film contains three big scenes that deliver what you want out of a film like this. And without CGI and bloated special effects! I must say that The Driver is not a film of depth... It's just an awesome car chase film and one that influenced filmmaker Michael Mann.
