May, 1980. Man-seob is a taxi driver in Seoul who lives from hand to mouth, raising his young daughter alone. One day, he hears that there is a foreigner who will pay big money for a drive down to Gwangju city. Not knowing that he's a German journalist with a hidden agenda, Man-seob takes the job.

A Korean film that runs the full range of emotions from low comedy to high tragedy. At times melodramatic, it nonetheless highlights that people can summon courage under the most terrible of circumstances. The Taxi Driver in question finds that Honour is more important than money. Based on a real incident in S Korea in 1980 it probably has a lot more resonance for those familiar with the Gwangju massacre. Yet even those who are not can appreciate the portrayal of ordinary people under the most horrific circumstances. Song Kang-Ho plays the part of a Buffoon awakened to the reality of 80s Korea by Tragedy. He gradually bonds with a German Journalist as they try and take in the horror of a peaceful Demo ending in multiple Killings. As mentioned before there is humour to leaven the Drama but you will be moved by the tragedy of Gwangju.

I'm grateful it doesn't descend to cheap, unearned melodrama, because now more than ever, we need a reminder of the dangers of power left unchecked, and of how our shared humanity is our strength. This is a well-made film that's engaging and potent.

The film climaxes with a breathless escape from Gwangju, as Kim and Hinzpeter elude government vehicles with the aid of other cabdrivers. But most impressive is Mr. Song, who persuasively conveys a working stiff’s political awakening.

A splendid film. Long but never boring and told a true story that really needed telling. The acting of the lead man Song Kan-ho is exceptional. And the production values and directing are outstanding. I am so glad I saw it!
