The Driftless Area (2015)

Pierre Hunter, a bartender with unyielding optimism, returns to his tiny hometown after his parents' death. When he falls for the enigmatic Stella, Pierre is unknowingly pulled into a cat-and-mouse game that involves a duffel bag full of cash, a haphazard yet determined criminal, and a mystery that will determine all of their fates. A contemporary fable about the ways we struggle to control time and fate in a possibly predetermined universe.

This movie tried really hard to be the love child of Fargo and Odd Thomas. The cinematography and locations were stunning and the performances excellent but the plot was just too convoluted, slow moving, and not as quirky as the director clearly intended. It kept us thinking it would have a grand ah ha moment / payoff that just never came. Very disappointing ending that left nearly all questions unanswered.

Saw this movie at Tribeca last year. It's very different from the book, but the casting and photography are both outstanding. The story might be a bit confusing, with a leading character that seems as lost as spectators might find themselves at some points throughout the movie. Specially outstanding is Deschanel, probably the most mysterious character in the movie, who gives a great delivery that has nothing to do with bubbly, happy Jessica Day. She's dark, she's ethereally beautiful- and she is intriguing from the beginning. Plaza also gives a delivery far from her Parks and Recreation days, and keep an eye out for Langella. Best part of the movie is its cast, with solid performances from everyone.

Beautiful scenery, but confusing, meandering plot never really grabs you. Really not a good film, despite the cinematography.

The idea was interesting, but the movie went south...

A self-consciously quirky, slightly otherworldly tale whose eagerness to win audiences over with whimsy only succeeds at keeping us at arm's length.
