The Divided Heart (1954)

During World War II, a German woman, Inga, goes missing and is presumed dead. Her infant son is placed in an orphanage where, years later, he's adopted by a childless couple. The adoptive parents' happiness is shattered when Inga reappears and insists on custody of her son.

Dull melodrama about a young boy who is adopted by German parents just after WW2 believing him to be an orphan but his maternal mother appears on the scene. Based on a true story

This is a dignified and beautifully done movie. It is dated of course, but for me it was incredibly moving. The characters, scenery and acting were superb, and it was a refreshing change from modern movies in that there was no "action" or hysteria. There was a genuine effort to convey a very sad human dilemma.
