Was there a movie like this when it came out? No. Is there now? Yes. One of the best examples of early "anti-hero" cinema.

Powerful blend of drama and humor. William Holden is perfect as the ne'er do well who is framed. Takes a risk by painting American servicemen in a poor light, especially since it was released near the end of the Korean War.

One of the best movies I've ever seen. Exceptional cast.

Billy Wilder is a master at films like this, Some Like it Hot, and others that contain equal parts comedy and sadness. Not so much an anti-war film as an anti-hate film, played at large against the backdrop of WW2 and in microcosm in the story of the prisoners of war at the heart of the film. Great performances and memorable characters.

I love this movie. Every time I see it on TV, I have to watch it. All 215+ times. Can you really light a match by striking someone's five o'clock shadow?
