Before Black Book, there was this powerful WWII epic about the Dutch on the defensive. Rutger Hauer turns in a career defining performance, in which he speaks both dutch and english. The central friendship of this film is quite palpable, and it provides a powerful look at patriotism, and pride, and how people may be inclined to fight for their homeland. One of the most under-rated, less known WWII films, finished off with a very cozy, and very triumphant atmosphere of celebration.

The best War movie ever made. Unless measured in body count. For once, real, heartfelt complexity is brought to the motivation of those who fight and the choices they make. So refreshing to get away from the certainties of US and Anglo WWII flicks.
