Bold, brutal, blasphemous, and utterly brilliant. Ken Russell's The Devils is a surreal, uncompromising indictment of the unconscionable injustices of the Catholic church in the seventeeth century. The screenplay is superb, and Oliver Reed delivers one of the finest, most overlooked performances of the decade. This is a film desperately in need of rerelease.

After a messy 40 years of censorship issues due to it's controversial and presumed sacrilegious nature, 'The Devils' will finally be released on DVD (in it's original British X-rated version, without the 'Rape of Christ') in March 2012. With Oliver Reed, Vanessa Regrave and Dudley Sutton giving their best performances, coppled with disturbing, but powerful images, Ken Russell brilliantly conveys the epitome of hysteria and chaos of a city disillusioned by religious madness that ensued Loudun, France in 1634 --and in turn produces one of the greatest British films ever made.
