Complex story of intellectual hubris, hero-worship, and betrayal (was it justified? Or not? The viewer must decide,) set in a girls' school in Edinburgh in the 1930s. Maggie Smith gives one of the greatest screen performances of all time, in a film that, among other things, provides a subtle critique of fascism. Not so great on the cinematic side of things, but the script (by Jay Presson Allen, based on Muriel Spark's novella) is brilliant, and the performances terrific. Smith is unforgettable.

I ADORE the book, so I didn't expect the movie to be better. and while that wa the case, I still liked it quite a bit and found it a fair adaptation.

Maggie Smith brings the twisted Miss Jean Brodie to life in film full of rich characters. British filmmaking at its very best. Any aspiring actress should watch this film.
