This is the paradigm for disturbing, artful, curious independent film. Dame Maggie Smith takes you through inner torment and the confusion of adolescence via her own secrets and the shameless frolics of her little band of pre-adult, fascinated with the delinquent, private school students out to experiment with life.

A classic of character development - the four girls in this film are outstanding, and so is Robert Stephens. I just wonder how many times Joan Cusack watched this film preparing for School of Rock - Celia Johnson invented the headmistress archetype as we know it.

It doesn't have bombs, explosions and car chases, but it is one of the best films to watch for character study, the de-evolution from admiration to a realization of who one's hero really is. I love and hate Miss Brodie. Maggie Smith is brilliant.
