The effects are terrible, the lip-synch is off, the MCU in the cockpit just looks wrong and the dog's name is racist. Who gives a f**k? Still the best of the 50's british war movies (which is saying something alongside Ice Cold In Alex, the Cruel Sea etc.), stupendous innovation on show. Just hope the Peter Weir remake doesn't suck.

If it hadn't been a true story it would have been unbelievable

This film is an absolute classic... A bit slow moving in places much like many films from the fifties this is never the less very watchable, and having just watched it in the cinema, i can say, far better on the big screen, but lets face it, what isn't? The film deals with the true story of the development of a new weapon by Dr. Barnes Wallis, and is an adaptaion of the Paul Brickhills book Enemy Coast Ahead. Its a bit Tally-ho in places, but so what? This is a true story of a group of dedicated men who helped to bring about the cancellation of Hitlers European tour, there's nothing wrong with a bit of Tally-ho mein herr!!

A film that displays persistance, makes you proud to be British.

I've lived in "bomber county" all my life and saw this film for the first time when I was very young and it as always been my favorite film, and even now if they show it on TV I have to watch it, even if it is just to point out the distant Lincoln Cathedral in the background. It may not be up to today's standard with all the effects but that's one of the reasons this film is good, it's honest film making at it's best, with a stella cast/acting and (for the most part) accurate story telling (i'm sure a historian could pick holes in it easily enough) it makes for a watchable war movie that is exactly what it says it is. As for the dogs name, well that's history too, Guy Gibson I'm sure never set out to offend anyone, I'm pretty sure he would have no idea what a controversy he would cause the day he named his black labrador, but just rememer that it says n***** on the dogs grave.
