Ironbark might not be a great film in the end, but it is a satisfying good one — a story that’s at its best when it colors outside the black and white (or Communist red, as it were) lines of war and hones in on the real, fallible men and women who fight it, one quiet inglorious step at a time.

This is a tense, somewhat gripping spy thriller film with a good performance from Benedict Cumberbatch. Its based on a true story and, as with most true stories, there's information provided by text at the end of the film, prior to the credits rolling and there's even library footage, which was interesting. Also present is Jessie Buckley, who plays Sheila, Greville's wife (not to mention Rachel Brosnahan, of 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' (Amazon Prime Video series) fame). The story is interesting and it isn't an overly long film, given the plot, I'd say its about the right length. It isn't exactly choc full of action but the uncertainty of what will happen to the characters (of course we know what happened in terms of the historical context of the cuban/russian nuclear war threat) keeps the viewer engaged. Its a fairly thought provoking watch I suppose and so I'd recommend it, yes.

It zigs when it might zag (unless you’re already familiar with Wynne’s life story), and “The Courier” becomes something much more dark, complex and moving.

While I do find the actual real life story fascinating and I think it is the story worth reading and seeing about, the movie itself felt a bit too boring for me, only some parts in middle and end parts where with real suspense. It felt like it is missing something.

Though there’s nothing new or transformative here, The Courier stays afloat due to the acting by Buckley, Cumberbatch, and Ninidze.
