Excellent! It's not quite 'Bridge of Spies', but 'The Courier' is too an awesome MI6/CIA/KGB infused flick. The two films tell tales regarding the Cold War, with the 2015 release narrowly a notch above this. Both have outstanding lead performances though. Benedict Cumberbatch is magnificent throughout, especially towards the end - the bald look suits him incredibly well, I must say... need him in a drug kingpin sorta role looking like that! In all seriousness though, I think this is my favourite Cumberbatch performance (from what I've seen thus far) - utterly brilliant! Merab Ninidze (also in BoS, albeit minorly) also puts in a top display, as he does in television's 'McMafia'. Jessie Buckley also gives a performance of note, which says a lot about her acting abilities given she doesn't feature all that heavily. Astutely paced, builds terrific tension and features some cracking acting.

Anyone with a taste for Cold War dramas will find an intriguing addition to their cinematic library with The Courier, a fact-based story featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as a Hitchcockian everyman who becomes the unlikely conduit to a Soviet leaker of secrets in 1960. It's the kind of historical tale that, after the closing crawl, will likely send more than a few viewers running to Google to read more.

Ironbark’s hook is that it’s based on true events, and the underlying history deserves to be shared.

This true story is set in the 60s, when fears of nuclear confrontation with Russian was at its height. Benedict Cumberbatch plays a British businessman who’s recruited to form an alliance with a Soviet officer and carry intelligence secrets back home. This is a pretty typical espionage narrative. All the performances are solid and the editing/direction keep it involving without being flashy. The story unfolds with steady interest, but doesn’t create much tension until the turning point scenario. A smart, old-school spy flick.

A confident, entertaining, and well-upholstered historical spy thriller about a regular guy who stumbles his way toward saving the world, it’s the perfect movie for anyone who watched “Bridge of Spies” and thought: “If only that had been 30 minutes shorter, a bit less artful, and a lot more British.”
