I'm not a real movie critic -- although I often play one on TV -- but this film is phenomenal. It will truly hold you in its sway from start to finish. The parallels to today's political climate are unmistakable. Easily on the same level of production, acting and writing as last year's Best Picture winner. Just wish I would have seen it on the big screen instead of on DVD.

The Conspirator is the first of several films slated to be released about the assassination of President Lincoln. This version, however, tells the true tale of Mary Surratt, the only woman arrested and charged with conspiring to kill the President. This is a story that is rarely told, but needs to be seen. Robert Redford has fashioned a well made court room drama that features a top notch cast with an exquisite eye for detail. From the costumes to the sets, Washington D.C. has never looked or felt so alive during this tumultuous time period in American history. At times, The Conspirator falls flat and seems to lose momentum in the middle section of the film, before finding its legs again. But this isn't so much a detriment as it is an observation. I loved The Conspirator and I recommend it for anyone who has an interest in a different story about one of America's most famous Presidents. Well done Mr. Redford, well done.

The Conspirator should skip theaters altogether and become the first film released straight to middle-school history classes, where the standards for what can generously be deemed entertainment are much lower.
