LOVED IT!!! Watched it for the first time this weekend. Whoever had the gall to say Judy Garland couldn't act never saw this film. Directed by Vincent Minnelli after their teaming on "Meet Me In St. Louis", this movie provides some of the most romantic footage ever filmed. Forget the beach scene in "From Here to Eternity" or Paul Henreid lighting a ciggy for Bette Davis in "Now, Voyager". When Garland and Walker meet again at Grand Central, I got chills all over. Lovely. Absolutely lovely.

Handsomely mounted romance - well structured, well shot, and well acted. Perhaps Judy Garland isn't so nuanced at this stage in her career, but Robert Walker is both charming and kinda innately creepy at the same time. It works nonetheless. The real standout is Keenan Wynn's single-take drunken performance, which must go for about 4 or 5 minutes. Very entertaining. Some beautiful shots from Minnelli, too - the most striking one being Walker, on a speeding subway, shooting straight into a close-up as he desperately searches for Garland. Haven't seen that one before.

Fun Judy Garland movie. This was a very romantic period piece - a love story in NYC - she wore a suit and spectator pumps through most of the movie, and had lipstick on through every scene (but beautiful). This was a very sweet movie.

I love how New York is every bit as much a star in this film as Judy Garland and Robert Walker. Bringing these lovers together and then dramatically keeping them apart required a cast of 7 million. This is all the more impressive, when you consider the movie--even the scenes of a bustling Penn Station--was shot in California. There is in this film a wonderful scene where Joe, visiting the city for the first time, mistakes the relative calm of a park for silence. After three years in the city, Alice knows better and tells him to just listen, because the sounds of the city are never far away. As they listen, the urban rhythms (and a soundtrack chorus) build to such an impelling crescendo they end up in each other's arms. The film is full of great performances by character actors who reveal by turns the warmth and indifference of the city--and lots of its humor, too.

War-time romance comedy. Not my sort of film generally but my wife loved it and I enjoyed it.
