The story of Santo Bastucci, a local banker with a rare gift for memorizing numbers; he is unwittingly cast into the forefront of an aging wiseguy's bid for power, Manny "The Hand" Mistera. Santo is caught between the loyalty he has for his cagey father-in-law, Benny, his childhood friend, Basta, and his streetwise uncle, Matteo, the pastor of their Brooklyn church.

Saw John Bianco in #TheBrooklynBanker last night. I was riveted, it was a really INTENSE 2 hours! Anyone who grew up Italian/Catholic in the 70's in New York or New Jersey will identify with the characters in this movie. Lovers of the Mob movie genre of all ages will enjoy it, and realize #TheSopranos was not the end of the genre, there is still plenty more to say. Director #FedericoCastelluccio says it here with passionate intensity. Paul Sorvino was outstanding in a supporting role to Troy Garity (Jane Fonda's son) who carried the movie. Go see it.

Troy Garity is awesome in this compelling period piece (early 1970's--really well done covering the styles and music of the times) drama. Great supporting cast too. My girlfriend and I were treated to a bonus Q-n-A with the writer, producer, and a cast member the night we attended, and we appreciated the further insights into the making of this cool flick.

Acting chops are occasionally on view — Mr. Sorvino and Mr. Proval play well together — but the plot is weak, the subplots tacked on.

Borrowing a few tricks from Martin Scorsese, the film isn’t a slavish imitation but an engrossing and grounded drama. It’s a pity, then, that director Federico Castelluccio, best known as Furio of “The Sopranos,” can’t deliver a powerful conclusion.

The ensemble cast is riveting in its layered, complex, and sensitive portrayals of complicated lives dealing with the harshness and shocking violence of an age-old tradition that continues to dictate every aspect of existence. Story and characters are engrossing and engaging as guided by the steady hand of Castelluccio whose deep appreciation for the actors' craft yields powerful performances as relationships develop with aching resonance and the tale wends its way to a haunting conclusion.
