Wada, a salary man, is enlisted to venture off to China to investigate a potential Jade mine. After his arrival, Wada encounters a violent, yet sentimental, yakuza, who takes the liberty of joining his adventure through China. Led on their long and disastrous journey to the mine by Shen, the three men come across something even more magical and enticing.

Not a very good movie. I wouldnt ever watch this movie again.

I laffed, I cried... Miikes fairy tale for us all. Doesnt make sense, doesnt have to. One of those films that haunts u for hours after seeing it. So beautiful, so wonderful.

Not to many people have heard this but it's one of Takashi Miike's earlier films. A drama with a level of charm and harmony about it, but since Audition came out at the same time, this gem was lost. The story itself plods along at a slow pace. However what saves this movie's snail crawl of narrative is Characters. A yakuza who is such an asshole but has a heart of gold, a naive but determined business man; i loved these people. Its high caliber of characterization, coupled with a heart warming ending ( possibly the least ambiguous Miike ending ) left me feeling warm and fuzzy inside and i couldn't ask for more.

A more restrained and poetic Takashi Miike movie than we're used to, but still containing this trademarks, like the crazy Yakuza guy, some slapstick, and surreal moments. Nice cinematography of remote China too, despite the obvious rather low budget. Recommended.
